THE START OF DEE DEE DAVIS’ JOURNEY
Originally, from California, Dee Dee is the second offspring of Darryl and Sydney Davis and the younger sibling of actress Aree Davis. Aree is recognized for her role in Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion,” which starred Eddie Murphy.
Both the Davis sisters were merely children when they stepped into the world of entertainment, and both exited Hollywood after trying their hand at acting for less than a decade.
Dee Dee’s acting journey began with “The Bernie Mac Show,” where she portrayed Bryana, the protagonist’s youngest niece. She remembers wearing rabbit slippers and a rabbit pajama set to her audition as her mother thought it would be appropriate for a night scene reading.
Upon securing the role, Dee Dee was introduced to her fellow cast members, including Mac, Kellita Smith, Jeremy Suarez, and Camille Winbush, who soon became like a second family to her.
Even though Dee Dee does not seem keen on resuming her acting career, she did come together for a reunion with “The Bernie Mac Show” cast in 2018 and 2019.
The show aired for five seasons spanning from 2001 to 2006, and audiences had the opportunity to witness the evolution of Dee Dee’s character from an adorable little girl to a sprightly and slightly impudent child, thanks to the young actress’s wide-ranging performances.
EXPERIENCES FROM “THE BERNIE MAC SHOW”
Dee Dee Davis, a former child actress on the show, shared some fond memories of her time on set during an Entertainment Weekly interview. Despite her young age and small stature compared to Mac, she was always drawn to him. She compared him to a friendly giant, much like the Jolly Green Giant character.
Being a child actor is challenging, but Mac’s warm and embracing nature made the experience much easier for Dee Dee and her co-stars. They would enjoy slices of chocolate cake and watch popular TV shows like “Maury” or “Jerry Springer” together. The on-set family felt so real to Dee Dee that she struggled to accept the reality when Smith, who portrayed Mac’s wife, introduced her to Mac’s actual spouse.
The show also served as a learning platform for Dee Dee, where she picked up diverse skills ranging from cartwheeling with Winbush to snapping fingers with Mac and Suarez, and even tying shoes and riding a bike.
A PERIOD OF TRANSITION
The show concluded in April 2006, and while most actors were eager to explore new ventures, Dee Dee took a hiatus. Despite her NAACP Image Award nomination and appearances on other shows like “House” and “Strong Medicine,” she chose to focus on schooling and retreated from the limelight for ten years. Even Bernie Mac’s sudden demise in 2008 did not interrupt her break.
However, Dee Dee returned to the public eye after a decade with exciting news for her social media followers: she was expecting her first child at the age of 20.
THE FAMILY OF DEE DEE DAVIS
Dee Dee Davis Kids and her partner, musician Smokey Lee Jackson, have been together since 2014. They welcomed their first child, Logan Anthony Lee, in June 2017. Even though Dee Dee generally keeps her personal life private, she shared the news of her second pregnancy with her followers in February 2021. She posted a sweet selfie with Logan and Smokey, displaying a positive pregnancy test.
“Hey everyone, we’re super excited to announce WE’RE HAVING A BABY! This is my family , and we cannot wait to welcome our new little addition,” Dee Dee wrote beneath the heartwarming snap.
Dee Dee Davis shared a series of pictures displaying her pregnancy journey, including a snapshot from her butterfly-themed baby shower where she was looking radiant in a purple dress that beautifully highlighted her silhouette. On April 25, 2021, Dee Dee and her partner were overjoyed to welcome their daughter, Leia. The announcement was made via Twitter, with a couple of photos featuring the baby’s feet and soft hair. A couple of weeks later, Leia was officially introduced to the world with a charming picture of her in a pink tutu.
Logan, Leia’s older brother, adores his role and is often seen showering affection on his tiny sister on their shared Instagram account, managed by Dee Dee. This account is a treasure trove of delightful photos and clips of the siblings enjoying each other’s company.
While Dee Dee does not seem to have plans to return to acting, she did partake in a reunion with her former colleagues from “The Bernie Mac Show” in 2018 and 2019. Bernie Mac was sorely missed at the event, but it was evident that the camaraderie amongst the remaining cast members remained strong. To her fans, Dee Dee continues to be their beloved “baby girl”.
