Isabelle Hobbs, a senior at Central Hardin High School, took the initiative and had the foresight to raise over $9,600 for the University of Louisville’s Department of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology. On September 20 at Central Hardin, raise RED, a fundraising initiative and dance party, was organized by Hobbs.
When asked how it felt to raise thousands of dollars for the department, Hobbs remarked, “That was by far the peak of my high school experience thus far.”
Central Hardin was the ninth high school in the state to have its own raise RED event, according to Hobbs. Raise RED was first a student-led initiative at the University of Louisiana.
An annual 18-hour dancing marathon takes place on campus as part of the U of L campaign. The length of high school raiser-ED is shorter; Central Hardin’s lasts eight hours. Dance Blue, a yearly event of a similar nature, is held at the University of Kentucky.
Hobbs assisted in the planning of Dance Blue events at Elizabethtown High School during her freshman and sophomore years of attendance. She claimed that she had originally planned to host a Dance Blue event at Central Hardin, but changed her mind after learning that three of the school’s pupils were receiving care at the University of Louisville.
Fundraising for cancer research is a personal cause for Hobbs. Hobbs reported that she just lost a 26-year-old family friend to cancer.
Hobbs enlisted other Central Hardin Beta Club members to assist in planning the project and raising money because it is a student-led initiative.
She claimed that in order to include a varied group of participants, she also spoke with teachers about finding volunteers for the project. Hobbs estimated that 150 pupils participated in the activity.
She remarked, “It worked out well. We had kids from all various school levels, all different hobbies.
Zumba, throwbacks, and Disney music were some of the numerous themes that were covered during each hour of the event. Additionally, every hour a different speaker would offer a testimony. Cancer patients and survivors, some of whom were current and former Central Hardin students, spoke during the event. According to Hobbs, participants would kneel each time a speaker shared their tale.
It was forceful and incredibly jarring, and it convinced Hobbs that what she had done was worthwhile. Everyone who worked on raise RED invested a lot of time in it.
Hobbs expressed her desire that the occasion would continue at Central Hardin after she graduates and become a yearly tradition.
People started discussing about next year’s event as soon as it was ended and wondering how they might get involved. “I want it to grow even more,”Susan Sherrard, a teacher at Central Hardin, found Hobbs’ enthusiasm for raise-RED to be motivating.
Sherrard remarked, “She is a role model for sure, an example of how far an act of compassion can travel.” “When all of these young people remember this experience and make a difference in their own ways throughout their life,” the author said, “I feel like she has planted a seed that will keep growing and reach throughout our town and beyond.
“Hobbs participates in Beta Club, Executive Council at Central Hardin, and the youth ministry at St. James Catholic Church in Elizabethtown in addition to her membership in Beta Club. Hobbs works at Dewster’s Homemade Ice Cream and Bakery to keep active after school as well
Hobbs Majors
Hobbs studied psychology during the summer at Morehead State University as part of the Governor’s Scholars Program. She stated that she intends to major in psychology and focus on pediatric eating problems in college.
No matter what Hobbs does next, Central Hardin teacher Leann Blair said, she has left a legacy of goodwill at the school.
She said, “What I appreciate most about Isabelle is her heart. She has kindness. Even though it is so simple, she does it exceptionally well. I feel honored to have met Isabelle.
