So, you know Maya Hawke, right? She’s actually following in the footsteps of her Hollywood heavyweight parents, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. You might recognize her from the TV show Stranger Things.
Guess what? Fans are getting excited for Inside Out 2! It’s been nine years since the first Pixar original came out, and now the sequel is dropping its first trailer on November 9. This time, they’re introducing a new emotion: Anxiety. Can you believe it? Maya Hawke is voicing this new character! In the trailer, you’ll see Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust being surprised by Anxiety and all the changes she brings. The movie’s director, Kelsey Mann, said in a news release, “Anxiety… might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat. That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds.”
Oh, and did I mention that Maya Hawke is starring alongside Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, and Liza Lapira? It’s going to be a fantastic cast! So mark your calendars, because Inside Out 2 is hitting theaters on June 14, 2024. Can’t wait!
Who Is Maya Hawke?
Maya Hawke, you know, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, is not only an actor but also a musician. You might recognize her from her role in Netflix’s Stranger Things or her cameos in movies like Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. She’s been making quite a name for herself in the entertainment industry. Oh, and did you know she’s released two self-produced albums? Her latest one, called Moss, came out in 2022. Maya’s got some serious talent!
Speaking of family, Maya is the older sibling of Levon, and she also has three half-sisters. Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, who were both famous actors themselves, met on the set of Gattaca and got married in May 1998, just a few months before Maya was born in New York City. Unfortunately, her parents divorced in August 2005 after seven years of marriage.
When Maya was a child, she was diagnosed with dyslexia and even got kicked out of school because she couldn’t read. But then she found a school for kids with learning disabilities and eventually learned how to read. In a 2020 interview with NPR, she mentioned that she still feels “limited”. Maya grew up in Brooklyn and went to Saint Ann’s School. As she got older, she started modeling and appeared in campaigns for AllSaints, Calvin Klein, and even graced the pages of Vogue. But her true passion was acting. She performed in school plays and attended summer acting camps. It wasn’t until later in high school that she seriously considered becoming a professional actor. After high school, she enrolled at Juilliard but ended up dropping out after just a year to pursue her career.
Stranger Things
Hawke mentioned in an interview with The Guardian that her parents were initially hesitant about her pursuing acting. They were concerned about the challenges of the public life and wanted to protect her from being solely reliant on their influence. They wanted her to have her own passion and work ethic. But once she was older and it was clear that acting was her own choice, they became very supportive.
Hawke’s acting journey began with her debut in BBC’s TV adaptation of Little Women in 2017. She then starred in her first movie, Ladyworld (2018), a thriller based on William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies. However, her big breakthrough came in 2019 when she joined the cast of the popular Netflix show Stranger Things in its third season. Her portrayal of Robin Buckley received critical acclaim, leading to her winning a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Presentation that year. In 2020, Hawke and her castmates were also nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
So, guess what? Hawke actually returned to the role in Season 4 and even got nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Drama Series at the 2022 Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards. Pretty cool, right? And get this, she’s going to be back for the show’s final season too, which is reportedly starting filming before the end of 2023. Exciting stuff!
In this interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Hawke mentioned that she’s open to the idea of Robin, who is a lesbian, having a girlfriend in the series finale. But she wants it to feel natural and not forced, you know? She believes that a character’s love life shouldn’t always be the center of their existence, and I totally get that.
Oh, and here’s something interesting: Hawke is totally fine with her character potentially meeting a not-so-great fate in Season 5. She’s like, “It’s the last season, so people are probably going to die.” And she’s actually hoping for a heroic exit, dying with honor and all that. Brave, right?
Can’t wait to see what goes down in the final season of Stranger Things!
Movies and TV Shows
Hawke’s early roles were on TV, but she’s quickly made a name for herself on the big screen. Just this year, she’s been in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, Wildcat, and The Kill Room. Fun fact: Wildcat was directed by her dad, and her mom stars in The Kill Room. Hawke loves acting with her parents, saying, “I love working with both of them. They’re really awesome and amazing at their job.” Her next movie, Maestro, hits theaters on November 22, 2023. Exciting stuff!
Maya Hawke Net Worth
Hawke has an estimated net worth of around $3 million, thanks to her modeling and acting gigs. According to Seventeen, she “likely” earned between $200,000 and $250,000 per episode of Stranger Things. Pretty impressive, right? 💰
Music Career
Besides her acting and modeling, Hawke is also an indie-folk singer and songwriter. She released her debut album, Blush, in August 2020, followed by Moss in September 2022. She even performed her song “Thérèse” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in March 2023!
But having a full-time music career isn’t really her thing. In a 2019 interview with Vogue, she shared that she sees music as a way to express her poetry. “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been writing poetry and trying to put it into music. I remember sitting on the couch with my dad, singing old folk songs by Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt, and Johnny Cash,” Hawke said. “To me, it feels like music is the best way to communicate and bring poetry to life in this day and age.”
Personal Life
So, in a June 2023 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Hawke shared this hilarious story about the biggest trouble she ever got into. It turns out, she lied to her parents and told them she was going to therapy, but she actually went to lose her virginity. Can you believe it? 😂 Hawke’s dad was definitely not happy about it!
By the way, Hawke identifies as queer and keeps her relationships private. In 2019, there were rumors about her dating Rolling Stone executive Gus Wenner, and she has also been linked to musician Spencer Barnett and actor Tom Sturridge. Quite the interesting love life, don’t you think?
Quotes
- When I was working with my dad on the set of Wildcat, I tried using his name, Ethan, to sound all professional. But you know what? It ended up just distracting people. They were like, “Why are you doing that?” So, most of the time, I just called him dad.
- You know, being part of a famous family is kinda like being the boring, indie Kardashians. It’s got its own quirks and all.
- Acting, well, I got into it because I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. It just felt like the right path for me.
