Who is Sophie Hunter?

Sophie Irene Hunter is an English actress, singer, avant-garde theatre director, and playwright who was born on March 16, 1978.

She is the daughter of Charles Rupert and Anna Katharine. Her parents obtained a divorce later on.  She has two younger brothers, Timothy and Patric. Also has two half-siblings, Lily-Rose and Samuel, from her father’s second marriage.

She is pianist Julius Drake’s niece.  Her maternal grandfather is General Sir Michael James Gow, a British Army officer who served under Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester in the 1950s.

He also served as the Queen’s Aide-de-Camp General from 1981 to 1984. Hunter’s maternal great-great-grandpa was J. E. B. Seely, 1st Baron Mottistone, a First World War politician.

Hunter attended Hammersmith’s St Paul’s Girls’ School. She attained her higher education at Oxford University. She studied modern languages, primarily focusing on French and Italian. She temporarily worked as a model for photographer Michael Roberts when she was younger.

She shifted to Paris right after completing her education at Oxford University. After graduating from Oxford, Hunter spent two years  studying avant-garde theatre at the L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. A career in theatre

Sophie’s passion for classical theatre and Avant grande stems from her degree in Foreign Languages.

She was a co-founder of the Lacuna Theatre Company.  She worked as an assistant director for the play Enron at the Royal Court Theatre in London’s West End and the Broadhurst Theatre on New York’s Broadway.

She also co-founded and served as the artistic director of the theatrical group Boileroom, which won the Samuel Theatre Trust Award for The Terrific Electric in 2007.

Hunter has directed, performed, and conceived theatre shows throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North America. She is also known for her Avant-grande plays. She directed the experimental drama 69° South (2013), Lucretia (2011), and the 2010 staging of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts in New York City.

Hunter directed mezzo-soprano Ruby Philogene in Phaedra (2015) during the Happy Days Enniskillen International Beckett Festival in Northern Ireland in cooperation with music director Andrew Staples. The Guardian praised the show, calling it “exquisite”.The Stage praised it as “creative brilliance,” and The Times called it “astonishing.”

She also directed Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw in Suffolk and London. Hunter worked as a  narrator in Music on the Meare at the Aldeburgh Festival in June 2017.

Debut on television

In 2004, Sophie Hunter made her television debut in the detective series Midsomer Murders. During the same year,  She played a supporting role in the action-comedy, Keen Eddie.

Music

Apart from directing and acting, Sophie Hunter has dipped her toes in music production too She seems to be a jack of all trades.

Hunter collaborated with songwriter Guy Chambers on a French-language music CD called The Isis Project in 2005.

In 2011, she again collaborated with Chambers on an English-language EP titled Songs for a Boy.

Hunter also worked with Armin van Buuren on the song “Virtual Friend,” which appeared on the latter’s 2010 album Mirage.
