Stella was convinced that her only route to success was to have a hit even before getting a record deal. Apart from music, Stella also ventured into acting, making her first appearance in a 1979 episode of the action-comedy TV series “The Dukes of Hazzard”. She shared a harrowing account in her memoir of a near sexual assault incident by a local politician – an experience that left her with not only a broken nose but a permanent facial scar. She chose to stay silent out of fear that she wouldn’t be believed. A portion of the memoir’s profits was generously donated to various domestic violence shelters across the Southeast United States. Stella hoped her book would inspire and empower single mothers, particularly those who have been victims of domestic violence.
